The Development Office

Every year the development office raises approximately 40% of LSA’s operating budget through foundation grants, annual fund gifts, corporate support and the proceeds of the annual benefit. In 2003, this amounted to $1,403,000. The balance of our income is from fees for service and government contracts. The money the development office raises is crucial to our work with families; no family is ever turned away because their care is not covered or because they cannot pay.

Most foundations make grants limited to reapplication for two or three years, if at all, while others change their guidelines. We are fortunate to have established a good relationship with several foundations that have not yet limited our ability to re-apply. But this is the exception. As a result, we must be constantly searching for new foundations who are willing to fund the kind of work we do.

In 2004 LSA received a three-year grant for $150,000 from the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation. This grant will fund a pilot program for diabetes prevention, designed by the Home Health Agency in response to the East Harlem’s diabetes epidemic, the highest rate of the disease in the city.
