In 2003, we took over one thousand community members on summer day-trips to destinations like Lake Welch, Bear Mountain, Rye Playland, The Bronx Zoo and Norwalk Beach. East Harlem has the highest rate of childhood asthma hospitalization in the U.S. One in four children in East Harlem has asthma. Thanks to the hard work of our Preventive Services team, none of the children referred to the program were placed in foster care. The median income in East Harlem is between $15,000 and $28,000 with 31% living on less than $10,000. The Little Sisters of the Assumption came to New York from Paris on a steamship in 1891. Our volunteers come from as far away as Australia, Germany, Spain, France, Iowa, Illinois, and from right here in New York City. In 2002, LSAFHS's staff consisted of 138 people.
East Harlem is the highest-risk community in New York City for infant mortality, has the highest child death rates, immunization rates, teen birth rate, has the largest number of children reported abused or neglected, students who failed to graduate from high school, violent deaths of teens, and children living below the poverty line. In 2002 89% of newborns were at high risk for physical, emotional, and developmental problems. The average cost of an overnight hospital stay in NYC for asthma treatment is $3100 - LSAFHS provides its entire array of asthma services to a family for $1800 for an entire year. New York Knick Shandon Anderson scored 28 points in the next game he played after giving 50 Thanksgiving dinners to LSAFHS families.
