Little Sisters of the Assumption Family Health Service

LSA in the Community

LSA Family Health Service's work is based upon a profound belief in the strength of families. With programs designed to integrate with each other, we work to help participants develop the skills and confidence to move toward full independence. As a grassroots agency serving East Harlem (96th to 132nd Streets from Fifth Avenue to the East River), we work to adapt our multi-disciplinary approach to meet the evolving needs of the community.

Since its founding in East Harlem in 1958, LSA has established a reputation for very high quality, persistent work with complex families, going where more traditional programs are often reluctant to go. Social workers, especially at local hospitals, continue to refer their most challenging patients to LSA, confident that the agency will find ways to address difficult problems, and work creatively with other organizations as necessary.

LSA's ongoing commitment to serving families in their homes greatly enhances its ability to develop and adapt programs which directly respond to problems in the community. In 2008 the agency provided over 5,500 home visits. These visits allow us to develop a high level of trust with families and help us to better understand not only the challenges facing our community, but also how best to respond to them in a manner that is most beneficial to our clients.

LSA welcomes persons of every race, color and creed; most of our services are provided in English and Spanish. Clients are referred by hospitals, clinics, schools, city agencies, neighbors and friends. They are never turned away because their care is not reimbursable or because they cannot pay for service.
