Central to the Community Health Nursing program
at LSAFHS are services for pregnant and post partum women and
their
newborns. Nurses are cross-trained in maternity and pediatrics
to provide nursing education and skilled care to medically at-risk
mothers and babies, many of whom are first time mothers, new immigrants,
poor and socially isolated, and members of families in crisis.
The nursing program links with the Early
Childhood Program, Advocacy and
Emergency Food Pantry, social work support services, and parenting
and other classes to leverage the quantity and quality
of care. Many referrals to Maternity Outreach come from the LSA
Emergency Food Pantry and Advocacy Program. Others come from
hospital
and clinic physicians, social workers, and from women who refer
themselves. The goals of the maternity outreach program are
to improve
birth outcomes, promote normal growth and development of newborns,
and enhance the health of families referred to the Agency.
One patient commented: “I want to thank you for looking
out for the people that need you. Your services are excellent. God
Bless You.”
