The Family Support / Preventive
Services Program works with troubled families to prevent children
from being placed in foster care, often spending mornings, evenings,
and weekends to accomplish the task. As many of the families do
not come to us of their own accord, relationships of trust must
be built from the ground up. Last year, out of the 75 or so families
we worked with, (220 Chlidren) only three families had children
placed in foster care.
The staff provide counseling for domestic
violence and substance abuse and mental and emotional problems,
make referrals, teach parenting and daily life management skills,
and act as advocates for, and teach the use of, services, education
and entitlements. Funding for this program comes largely from the
Administration for Children's Services (ACS) of the City of New
York. The program is aided by student interns from the Fordham School
of Social Service and the Hunter School of Social Work.
