Volunteering at LSA
Volunteers are essential to LSA – we simply could not function as we do without them. With the wide range of volunteer opportunities we can offer, LSA is a great place to get involved and have a positive and important impact on the families we assist—you can help make a real difference!
Volunteers work in virtually every LSA program: in our Community Adult Education Program they assist in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), computer classes and adult basic education in Spanish, group childcare Advocacy/Food Pantry Program they help families facing critical, immediate problems; and in The Sharing Place thrift shop they help in our store.
We have volunteer opportunities for as little as 2 hours and up to a full-time (37.5 hours a week) commitment. Our Volunteer Program is notable for attracting talented and committed volunteers from New York City and beyond the metropolitan area. Whether you are looking for a short or long-term commitment, it’s almost certain that you will find a good fit for your talents and availability. We welcome interested individual volunteers as well as group and corporate volunteer projects. And we are an Americorps partner site.
Here are just a few of the ways you can volunteer at LSA:
Mentoring: become a mentor in our Girls’ Mentoring Group
Teaching: assist in our ESL, Basic Education in Spanish, or Computer Class
Tutoring: tutor a child one-on-one in our After School Tutoring Program

LSA is an Americorps partner site. Americorps, the National Youth Power Mentoring Corps, connects volunteers with agencies that provide services for young people. As an Americorps volunteer you will gain valuable experience and receive a bi-weekly stipend. Americorps volunteers are also eligible to receive an Educational Award of nearly $5,000 that can be used for tuition or pay student loans.
